My new quail

Just curious cause I am new to poultry, do people mostly raise quail to eat or for eggs or just for pets? They are certainly pretty and it seems like a lot of people have them!

I think it depends on the person. I think many on this list eat the eggs or the quail, but some simply enjoy them as pets. I like the Coturnix because they're relatively easy to raise, are calm, and make good meat and egg birds. People who raise button quail do so for pets -- I would think it would take a lot to make a dinner!

Well thanks guys. I will be raising them for eating the meat and also the eggs. The man and woman I got them from also sells jalapeño/habenero pickeled quail eggs. Let's just say I bout the quail and those. They are absolutely amazing. I will be trying that. I just think we need to find a good quail egg peeler. I couldn't imagine how long it would take to peel a lot of those.

Anyway I put them in there cage last night and they got settled in. I was not expecting eggs for at least a week from reading on here it takes a while after they are moved. Anyway I went out earlier to feed and water and "wala" I had 4 eggs in the cage. Man it sure don't take to long to get hooked at this.

I have some bantams due to hatch on Saturday of next weekend. When should I start to collect eggs to go in the bator probably on that Monday afterwards. Should I set the date I want to put them in the bator and count back 7 days.

Thanks Clint.

Just a note on peeling the quail eggs, because I discovered this yesterday and was so thrilled! Steaming the eggs instead of hard boiling makes them SO EASY to peel. They taste creamier too, I think, but I was mostly so excited about how easy they were to peel.
