I need help, my emotional support rooster has a bad leg. Currently he has bumblefoot but his leg was bad well before discovering the bumblefoot. I'm worried his leg will never work properly and I need advice on how to make a walker and/or anything else that could help. Thank you ❤️

Do you know what his primary problem was? Was it a slipped tendon or leg bone deformity, such as a twisted tibia or varus/valgus deformity? A picture or two of him standing might help. Chicken sling chairs and wheelchairs can be made to help get a disabled chicken upright, kept cleaner, and help them reach food and water. Here are some examples:

He also seems to be chewing his feathers to points, also some parts seem to be stuck together and I've been separating them and he likes when I do it, so it must have been bothering him.

i can feel the kernel in his foot now, i have had to surgery 3 times now and it never fully healed. Our pharmacist gave me an antibacterial topical cream and told me to use it 3 times a day and it should clear it up but i know i have to get the kernel out.

The bumblefoot does not look bad enough to keep opening it. I usually don’t do surgery unless the foot is red and swollen or causing lameness. Many people use betadine and sugar on a dressing, and leave it on for days at a time. I would probably just treat it topically, instead of doing surgery. You may be feeling scar tissue inside.

Hard to tell much about his bum foot with the pictures. Is he able to get around well enough to get food, water, and act normally? More than likely, his foot problem is permanent. Is he by himself or with another chicken? Have you checked to see if he has any mites or lice on his skin that might be causing itching? Since he is disabled and may not be dust bathing, I would make him a little dust bath in a container, and help him dust and rub to keep his skin healthy. All you need is a container, some sand and dirt from your yard, nothing else. Here is a good article about dust bathing:

He does dust bath regularly, he can to that himself but his leg has gotten worse in the last few days. It seems like he injured it. He is extremely clumsy and likes to jump out of our arms, so I'm worried he may have hurt it.

So Roos leg is still bothering him alot. I have been keeping him on the bed with me and he crates to sleep. But even on the bed his is high stepping with that leg. It's the worst I've ever seen his leg but the bumblefoot is looking much better. Which leads me to believe he has hurt it. I'm at a loss as to what to do to correct it as he is stubborn and fights with me when I try and help him (not aggressively, just like a cranky toodler). I just want to make him better, I cry alot thinking I may lose him. We don't have any aviary vets close but the ones even hours away aren't taking new patients. I will keep calling around as I want him to get seen if this keeps up but is there anything I can try in the meantime?

Hi! I know it's been a while but we have still been fighting this. Does this look like the bumble? I feel like i finally got it!

Yes, that looks like it may be it, and maybe it has become more fibrous with time. I have usually seen a solid yellow core, but it can vary from bird to bird. Hopefully it will heal now.

I just wanted to update. He walks and runs just fine now :) he must have just built up those muscles! 🦵he's a strong boy now xoxo

Thank you for helping this worried mama!
