Hello from Wellsville NY. I finally took the plunge and bought 6 Bantam Buff Orpanington from the feed store. I love the temperament of these chickens. Problem is they were straight run. I think every one of them are roos. What do yall think?

Welcome to BYC!

I've never had Orps but you could post a photo of each bird over on the breed/gender forum and maybe someone can give you an idea. Read the picture guidelines so you'll know what members will be looking for in the photos.

Good luck to you, I hope you get some girls in that batch!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. NorthFlChick has given you some good advice. Given the size and redness of the comb and wattles (unless it's more than 14 weeks old), the bird in your pic is a cockerel. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Orpingtons.

Straight runs seem to be a name for getting mostly roosters.
It happens far too often to be coincidence. Even though straight runs are suppose to be "straight" as hatched, I'm convinced most hatcheries use straight run orders as a way to get rid of a few extra cockerels by shuffling them into the straight run order. It's why I've only ordered pullets for that past several decades, and even then I will usually get a cockerel or two in the order.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Buff orpingtons are my favorite breed too! I love their eggs, personalities, looks and just everything about them! I'm glad you are enjoying your's as well.

I can't seem to find where you write a post in the app so I'm doing it here.
I have a chicken who out of the blue can't stand on her own. Feed is 18 % protein whole grain, given calcium every other day. Also all the other hens havebbasically stopped laying. If I do get an egg it's very small and off color. Hens are Rhode Island Reds and are 1 1/2 yrs old. Help!!!!!
