Im new to the chicken world and have only had chicks for 3 and half weeks. I had 8 chicks as of last night now I am down to two. I had just put my babies outside about 3 days ago, 3 were 5 and half weeks, 3 were 4 and half weeks, and 2 are 2 weeks. The two that are 2 weeks only went out during nice warm sunny days. Last night the 6 oldest chicks were killed by dogs. They had somehow ripped the galvanized wire off the corner of the coop and got in and killed everyone of my poor babies. I became hysterical as I had just lost a cat less than a week ago by stray dogs running around our neighborhood and now I have lost my babies

. We will be making some major changes to our coop to better predator proof it. When we built it last week we didn't think anything could get through that galvanized wire but we were proven to be very wrong. I had gotten very attached to them little babies and I'm very saddened that their little lives were ended so abruptly in such a horrible way.

What we have around the coop is called galvanized steel hard wire cloth. We will most likely be putting chain link over top of that.

The dogs that got the chicks were my own. That's the hardest part! I love all of my animals and don't want anything bad to happen to any of them. They are in separate fences but they got into that fence and into the coop. I have learned a lesson in this and thats never to under estimate my dogs no matter how gentle they are. Im angry at myself for what happened, and will do everything in my power to make sure it never happens again.

one thing you might want to try is an electric fence charger .. you can buy them pretty cheap . you run a strand of the wire , with insulators at the bottom of your fence ,then another about 2 ft. up then one at the top .whenever a wet nose hits that hot wire they will lose interest fast ..you can loop the wires and run as many strands as you need. you want to put them all the way to the top ,,,to discourage climbing varmits .

axelsangel, really sorry about your chicks. I too lost ten half grown chicks to my 1 y/o german shepherd puppy. it was my fault, I left the gate open by accident.
it's just terrible. these darn chickens are so easy to get attached to. who would have thought they have so much personality and character?

I hope you figure your coop security out & don't ever have to deal w/something like that again. really sorry about your cat too.

My dogs are german shepherds also, 2 of them one male and one female that is pregnant. I also love the personality of those little boogers they are so funny when they are chasing a mosquito or flying insect, then burring themselves in the dirt. I will guarantee you it WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN!
