My young roo Lucifer was already under the weather with fowl pox. He was out in the backyard with his girls, mudbathing happily under the trees. I was inside in the AC. I heard a noise and looked out the window to see a puff of white feathers on the ground - my worst nightmare! I dashed out in the backyard expecting to see a hawk flying away with my bird when instead I see my two dogs happily chasing poor Lucy around the yard and pulling out mouthfuls of feathers! I quickly grabbed them and threw them in the house. They were very pleased at how they had broken through the fence and tormented my little flock.
I found Lucy and two of the girls huddling in the corner and the other two nowhere to be found. Lucy got the worst of it - missing all of his tail feathers and who knows what else. I quickly scooped him up and deposited him in the darkened bathroom before I went out to find the other two. I feared the worst, but luckily my little easter egger was crouched down in a shock position along the fence. I scooped her up and put her back in the enclosed run with water. Herded the other two inside. Couldn't find the campine but she is flighty so I figured she hopped the fence. Found her in the neighbors yard and got her back with her friends. The girls all seem fine except a little spooked. Horrible thing to go through - especially when it's 105 outside!
Poor sweet Lucy is now tucked away in a crate with some vitamin water. I will let him relax a little before I assess his wounds. From what I can tell it's just some missing feathers but I will check him in a couple of hours.
Argh...horrible day and a good reminder to never let your chicks free range without supervision. If I hadn't been close I would have lost all my peeps
