My quail pens

a few quail questions : cost to feed for a dozen a month? do they really start laying at six months? do they lay daily? which type is best for eggs. tired of chickens, but i still want eggs.

As far as feed they dont eat alot but waste more than they eat but there is things you can do about that. Standard corturnix start laying around 6 weeks and yes you get around a egg a day. Best type that's hard to say. But just for easy keeping and eggs I will have to go with corturnix. O by the way it takes roughly 5 corturnix eggs to make 1 chicken egg.

Hi Matt,

Coturnix quail lay at 9 weeks or so. They lay daily but may stop for winter when the days are short. You can overcome this with supplemental light if you wish. My cost for feed is about $20 for 50lbs of turkey and gamebird start and they go through it slowly. I've had quail for about 5 months and I've purchased 3 bags, one just about 2 weeks ago, but I started with more than 20.

Statistically quail will lay best in the first year so you'll need a plan to rotate out non layers later.

It takes 3 to 5 quail eggs to equal 1 chicken egg so plan for that as you decide what your needs are.

Good luck and have fun.
