I always knew he was a handsome devil, now it turns out he's smart too!
Whenever I feed the chooks a treat of bread my roo won't eat it off the ground, he'll only take it from my hand. The girls run here and there trying to grab a piece that I've thrown, but he stands still just a few feet in front of me.
So this morning I'm holding out a slice of bread for him to peck at and I noticed something. He'll take one bite and swallow it. The next bite he spits out for the girls to grab. Then he takes a bite and swallows it. Next bite on the ground for the girls.
Handsome and smart. What more could you ask for in a roo!

At least yours eats some!! Mine just takes piece after piece and drops them on the ground for the girls. I just sit there going, Awwwwww. But then I feel bad, because he won't eat any.

When I let them out to freerange he makes it like 2 feet out the door and does his little call to the girls, as if he found the 'special' grass. Meanwhile, most of them are already 20 feet away playing in the flower beds and getting the good stuff. My roo is sweet, but I don't think he is the sharpest tool in the shed LoL.

Question is, would you really want him to?

Too cute...I wonder when my roo ever eats cuz outside its almost never! Every treat I give and treasure he finds, he calls the girls over. Soooooooo cute. I willl try this with the bread and see if my boy is smart like yours.

The only time he doesn't feed the girls first is when he's molting. Some BYC folks wiser than me pointed out that during molting he needs all the nutrition he can get for himself, to help grow in new feathers.
