...and crows for the next three hours, until I feed at about 7:30. He's in a traditional A frame tractor, half roof, half wire. Tonight I threw a blanket over much of the wire portion so it will hopefully keep things a little dark a little later. Is there anything else I can do?
Aside from being NOISY, he is a very, very good rooster. No soup pot suggestions please.

If he's a good roo, I wouldn't suggest culling or getting rid of him strictly on account of his crowing (assuming it's legal to keep roos where you live and he doesn't put the rest of your flock in jeopardy of getting reported by a not-so-appreciative neighbor). Mine have started as early as 3:00, wakes up the neighbor roo and then proceeds to have crowing contests through the wee hours of the morning. I have heard about no-crow collars, but have never tried them so I don't know how well (or if) they work. Roos crow; it's they're nature. Some just obviously like doing it more than others.

The blanket seemed to work quite well last night, for anyone who has the same problem. I didn't hear him until just before 7, which is a HUGE improvement.
Of course on the night the rooster is quiet my dogs decided to freak out and run around barking all night long. :sigh: I think we had a critter in the yard but all the chickens are fine this morning.
