My almost 8 month old buff Orpington rooster (a very very good boy) started showing signs of frostbite on his comb the other day. I added extra insulation to the coop, it is ventilated by two small windows lower than their roosting bars, and many people recommended I put vaseline on it. I put vaseline on his comb and a bit on his waddle and this morning it was SO much worse!!! Last night it didnt even get very cold :( I took him inside and cleaned him with warm water and fully dried him, and I’m thinking I should keep him inside a few days while he heals but I’m scared it will stress him out to be separated from his ladies. I just don’t know what else I can do, he can’t stay inside all winter and I don’t know how else to prevent it. I really didnt want to add a heater to my coop but is that the only option?

Photos are when I first noticed the frostbite and put on the vaseline and then the morning after, I feel so awful for my poor sweet boy :(((

Let's see your coop, it likely needs insulation and more ventilation above the roosts.
Vaseline only makes it worse and can encourage frostbite. It shouldn't be touched at all if possible.
He'll heal, the tips may fall off but he'll heal. Put him back with the others.
I wont be home for a bit but it’s basically a big wooden cube with roosting bars and a slanted plastic roof, about 2” of sand covered by 6” of straw on the bottom. I stapled old feed bags all around the outside and all the seams are sealed with paint and caulk. I’ll add a ventilation window up toward the top ASAP. I won’t touch his comb or anything anymore thank you for the reassurance that he’ll be okay 😭

I prefer overhead ventilation in winter, and no drafts in the lower part. His frostbite will heal in time. There may be some rounding off of the comb tips. Do not put any creams or ointments on his comb or wattles. It is painful, so don’t handle or massage the tissue.

I'd put him back with the ladies.
