Ok I got three silkie chicks......Two ended up being roosters.......They all seemed to get along but with the two roosters i thought the tiny black hen might get too much attention if ya know what i mean....

I was worried the rooos would be to hard on her but they all seemed fine....Then the crowing started and i decided to get rid of one of them. I got rid of Cash.....and kept Johnny. The very first day i noticed June getting picked on and Johnny being aggressive even toward me. Every morning when i open their door he comes prancing down the plank and doing this little dance with his chest all puffed up. She doesn't come right out like she use to.

June is sooooooooo tiny that i worry he might hurt her. He keeps her from her food and bosses her around horribly.

Is he just a brute and should i get rid of him? I love the crowing and don't really want to not have a rooster but i might have to.

I would add about 6 to 8 more girls in there with them. My rooster has 13 girls and in september he will have 20 girls. I wouldnt let her in there by herself with him. Rooster dont STOP ! I feel sorry for my 13 girls.

I have a BR Roo who has four hens right now. Three RIR and EE He likes one more then the others. She is bald on her back from him picking at her all the time. Two of the other three are getting picked on now as well. That is just rooster behavior. He will have a run all to him self in about two to three weeks.

I had two BR Roos untill this saturday,{had to keep them seperate they attched each other] , we have a pack of coyotes

[they have never bothered us before because of our dogs ] but we think they come across the river and got Reggie saturday.

Charles and his hens are fine. We just moved there coop in front of the house more so we can keep an eye on them better.

I would definately add more hens BUT at the same time, I don't keep roo's who don't treat the hens well. The RIR roo I have now won't eat until his girls have eaten, he won't even take a treat from me unless it is to feed it to one of the girls. He will only have some when they are all eating. When I let them out in the pasture he stands and watches over them and also finds bugs etc. which he gives to them. And he is friendly with me and my son as well. Roosters can be decent and, for myself, I don't want to be breeding nasty tempered ones.

I asked the question about 2 weeks ago, Which rooster do I cull?
the most pertinent answer was, "Wait, their attitude will tell you which to keep." Sure enough, I have watched all 4. and made THE decision. The Huckleberry rooster is the one we call stub tail. He's very nice to the girls, stands watches the fields and skies, sounds like a raptor when he growls a warning and could knock the other roosters off in 3.5 seconds.

the winner! Huckleberry is a gentleman to his ladies, I'm so glad we took the time to watch the difference in personalities. He has 22 hens to watch and does a great job. My ladies have not started to lay yet and too late in the year for a broody. It's just the guardian bird I'm interested in since the flock free ranges.
