Nope. I'm not like that.
I chase my cat for miles trying to get a rat out of his mouth. Not likely to let my cockerel eat a beautiful bird, even after its died.
I'm extremely soft.

It didn't look like protection.
He acted how he does when I give him food. Say an apple that can roll.
Casual, not aggressive, but following the food.

None of mine have ever killed anything bigger than a baby slow worm.
I've seen them running around with mice tails :sick that the cat left. But not actually killing something. And it was a tiny bird!
It sounds to me like he just got a little too curious and pecked the shiny eye and accidentally murdered it

Chickens eat everything that doesn't eat them first.

For a chicken to kill and eat any animal it can catch is a normal, natural behavior not an aberration.
I should watch out. I'm not in the habit of eating my chickens.

It is extremely out of character for him.
I've watched him walking around with those birds, and them eating food next to him.
