The next egg to begin production after the first mating should scientifically be fertile.

The hen has a small pocket like area where the roosters sperm is deposited. She cab produce fertile eggs from him for 2 weeks and sometimes as long as 3weeks.

The next egg she lays may not be fertile. So don't confuse that with my above statement - it is the first yolk to be released and in the process of making an egg.
