Hello everyone, i started on this forum for expert help. My rooster has been limping for days and now he doesn't want to walk, we kept him in a separate cage alone with a blanket and food with water, he just sits all day. I thought he had bumble foot but i can't see any signs of it. Whats causing him to limp and be lazy? he was never like this. Im really concerned about him and his health. He means a lot to me. Im attaching some pictures of his foot. We applied some medicated powder for treatment of his legs. He limps on his left foot or right. I can't remember well. We cut off his feathers that were on his foot so he can feel more comfortable. Please let me know whats wrong and what can we do? I hope its short term and goes away as he's resting a lot now.

In the photographs...pictures 2 and 6 show a distinctive black mark...he may have a bumblefoot type infection in the toe...it may be advisable to soak his foot in a warm betadine or epsom salt water solution for 15 minutes..re-examine that foot to see for any signs of swelling...surgery is the usual option if that is the cause...can you re-post with closer images of that blackened area ?

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, he's sleeping right now and its kinda dark so i don't wanna disturb him. Ill work on him tomorrow. Can we soak his feet with any kind of anti-bacterial medicine? we don't have any of those salts except table salt obviously. We were gonna do a sorta quick surgery on him but stopped due to the fact we couldn't tell if he had a bumble foot. From the pictures i saw on the internet, bumble foot grows usually on the middle area of the foot and not on the toe, but i may be wrong. We'll soak him in hot water tomorrow and see how it goes. Its just really sad seeing him like that.

Just out of curiosity for everyone. Does bumble foot ever go away by itself? Or do we have to treat it. Could it be something else thats causing him to limp?

If you have betadine ( iodine solution ) it is anti bacterial....as is honey but as a first measure you need to clean that blackened area of his toe and examine it closely...true bumblefoot is normally found on the foot pad...the blackened area may be due to an injury or a torn toe nail...if that is the cause it will be giving him a degree of pain and hence a reluctance to use that foot...

Bumblefoot will never go away by itself..it needs treatment, having said that, the blackened area may not be bumblefoot...but it is likely to be an infection...

By any chance...has your weather been very cold recently ? Frostbite can cause similar images...

Better in the meantime to soak and clean the foot...look for signs of swelling and re-post new images..we'll be here to help you and your Roo...

Thank you, you're too kind. Its hard finding people out here who care for such animals. My aunt said to shoot him so he can be out of his pain which really ****** me off. If its not bumble foot I'm really happy since i cannot stand to do surgery or cut him in any way. Well since the past week it had been raining a lot the entire day which made the water level rise up greatly, so maybe something to do with the water? and him being out in the rain? He never fights with other roosters nor does he do stupid things, he's very docile and peaceful and hangs out with humans a lot actually rather than his own flock. But now he's more with the chickens which i love. I'll definitely work on both his feet tomorrow. Strange thing is, he doenst cry or make noises when we mess with his foot, he even lets us carry him and when we put him down he just stays down as if he's lying on a bed which is very very weird, so I'm thinking that foot is really hurting him.

So now i just put his feet in hot water for a few minutes with anti-bacterial mixed with it and look for swelling? will this tell us anything? If i keep doing this every other day will his pain go away?

If that helps, i can get some epsom salt from the store. I really want him to be normal again.

Use warm water..not hot...you can use plain salt in the water if you wish...use hot water to dissolve the salt and let the water cool down to a warm temperature before soaking his feet...

If he has a minor infection in his foot...a soak every day or so may heal whatever it is that is affecting him...if you see any signs of an open wound you should clean it thoroughly, apply an antibiotic powder and put a dressing on his clean foot to stop any dirt or poop getting in there. His foot will need to be clean and dry after any treatment. Keep us updated please!
