I have 30 hens and two Roos. They are easter eggers. Just recently they have been coming up to me and charging at my feet. One more than the other. I'll point at them and yell NO! Loudly.. it usually works. Sometimes not so much.. my foot has to kick at them to make them stop. They will do this at least once a day to me. I haven't done anything to warrant their behavior. I give them treats everyday, etc. Feed them from my hand and everything. I've tried to pick them up and hold them like it says to do but I can't get close enough without them charging me. What to do?

Also add they do this to my husband as well. They also don't like my kids. They are good with the hens and protect them. I just don't know why they've turned on us humans, raised them since they were chicks.

My method of managing roosters (actually cockerels, as they are not a year old yet) is this: I keep them out of my space. As soon as I know I have a cockerel, I distance myself from it. No more handling, no more hand feeding, nothing like that. As they get older and out of the brooder, I walk toward them until they move away. If they are where I want to be, I go there. I look them in the eye and let them know that I am the boss. Any movement toward me is immediately met with me walking toward them and chasing them if I have to, to get them to change their mind. IMO, the best rooster is one who keeps his distance when I'm around.

ETA - I have not had a problem cockerel/rooster since I have started treating them this way

Thank you all so much for your advice and information! hopefully something gives. I also had no idea roos shouldn't crow in my presence... They do this all the time near me and it's ear peircing pain. Constantly crowing when I'm near.

I don't worry about whether or.not they crow in my presence. I am not another rooster, so I don't see it as a threat or a challenge. I also don't care if a rooster mounts a hen in front of me. That's part of his job. Again, I'm not another rooster, so he's not stepping on my toes. My roosters don't need to see me as the "alpha roo". They need to see me as the human that feeds and takes care of them. The ones who can't figure that out get put in the freezer.
