I've had a few BYCer's wanting to see pictures of my coops for my Silkies. My house is 12x84! 3/4 of is belongs to the Silkies and the rest for my other breeds. Each of my Silkie pens are 5x12 with concrete floors covered with builders sand and shavings. The juvenile pen is 8x12 with sand & shavings. We originally started with 3 pens and grew from there. My husband is very tolerant of my hobby!!!

They are very happy in their "chalets"!!

I love your coops! How thick is the concrete? I've been trying to talk my hubby into something very similar to yours. He is insisting the concrete needs to be 4-6 inches thick, but I was hoping we could use a lot less since it is not like he would be parking a car or even his lawnmower on it.

It is so hot here in Florida, that my husband & I decided to have the pens as open as we could. Gives more air circulation and the pens do not smell at all. In the winter months, we put up aluminum all the way around the coop to keep it warm. In the summer, when the threat of hurricanes are upon us, we also take extra precautions. In answer to your question, the concrete is 3-4 inches deep.

Is there insulation underneath that metal roof?... I would think it would be like an oven... in the sunshine

The center of the roof is 10 feet high from the ground with a vented ridge cap. We have plenty of air circulation. When it is hot, I always have fans in my pens anyway!!
