Hello all, so I have 1 silkie chicken which just laid an egg. Does that mean that it is a hen chicken? I have been told that roosters can lay eggs also? My chicken was sold to me as "unknown sex", but I have heard it crowing (I think it was crowing) on a few occassions.

If it lays, it's a female. Hens can crow upon occasion, but roosters never lay eggs.

Yes, pullet (young female).
Hens do crow...some of the anyways ;) Roosters never lay eggs! They make it possible for the chick to be created.

thank you for letting me know, will she sit on the egg to hatch it?
Not unless shes gone broody. You will definitely know if you have a broody hen. They will sit on the nest, even with no eggs in it, and they act testy when you try to remove them. I would just keep collecting her eggs unless you see her broody for a few days. Then, if you want her to hatch eggs, you can stop taking her eggs and let her sit on them. The eggs will not be fertile unless you have a rooster in the flock that is breeding her. If you have no rooster, then the eggs will not hatch no matter how long she sits on them.

ohhh, thanks, I thought they would be able to hatch, but that is fine! also if I were to get a rooster could it be any breed or would it have to be the same chicken breed what I already have, which is a silkie? Do chickens fight?

Depends.
Do you want to have pure silkie chicks or mixed?
If ypu get I different breed I wpuld suggest getting another bantam.

They might squabble a little working out the pecking order but thats normal.
