You might remember about a month ago, I posted that I had broody turkeys and that my son stuck some chicken eggs under then. Well, I thought that Sunday was about the time they should have hatched by. I chased the turkeys (there are two of them there) off the nest and saw no sign of pipping or anything. One of the eggs had been squashed early on. Well, I figured I'd give it a few more days, so today I went in fully expecting to gather the eggs to toss and the turkeys were hissing more and snipping at me worse that before. I kept after them and they really protested. Suddenly, I heard chirping!!!! I got them off and there was a cute little baby chick!!!! I pulled "her" out (being hopeful here) and checked the two remaining eggs. No sign of anymore pipping, but I will leave them in for another day or two to be sure. Any way, I have one cute little Appenzellar Spitzhaben/Buff Orpington, or A Sprizhaben/Ameraucana chick in the brooder! I'm just worried that she will get lonely. :-( I do feel sorry for the turkeys...taking their chick after all their hard work!
