I have been raising silkies for over five years, and have never come across a way to sex them before they're 8-12 weeks old. Most hatcheries I know of sell them as straight run, as they can't even by vent sexed. You can buy a DNA test, but that costs money, and takes a while to submit and get the results.
The other day, I was on mypetchicken.com and noticed there were options for 'female' 'male' and 'straight run' silkie chicks, that would be no more than a few days old. I highly doubt they're doing DNA tests for each bird, but can't think of another way they could be doing it. Curious if anyone can think of how they're doing this, or if anyone has ordered sexed silkies from them that can attest to getting almost all pullets or cockerels. I'm stumped!

I couldn't tell you but MPC is a middle man and gets their chicks from a hatchery. Can't recall which one. They also charge quite a bit. I'd rather go to a successful silkie breeder and get a good one. Show/breeding folks usually don't sell the good ones till 4-5 mos. of age.

When my friend used to buy them at that age, they always were pullets and very nice ones as well.

Even though MPC silkies come from a hatchery, its a partnership and they are still MPC exclusive silkies. They look really good and are worth the money. The silkie chicks are sexed through vent sexing and this is according to MPC customer service.

I order from them all the time. They vent check them. They are very careful and don't hurt them. Mine have been 100 % accurate!
