Hello, I have a littel banny rooster ,his name is Romeo , he stays in a secure area with his mate and two other bannies, they are caramel color with black spots. Romeo looks like the chickens they call American. Anyway, he has been looking bad, comb has gotten lighter, and his beak and face look a little pale. He cannot fly up on the wood ramp to go back inside his sleeping area. He seems ,'full' or bloated, he seems to eat scratch and starter food, but has not seem to play with friends. We put him in a seperate cage to monitor his eating and drinking. We have put antibiotic in his water. The only thing that I can think of is maybe he got bit by a rat . We have found some around and killed them. The poison we used was in NO way able to get to any chickens. We love our chickens. Any ideas, ? Nobody else is showing any signs of distress. Thank you.

By full or bloated, do you mean that his crop is full, or do you mean that he is huddling or puffing up? Is he new, have you moved, or added any new chickens? How old is he? Coccidiosis can cause some of his behavior, mites, or an impacted crop may be of concern. Has he been wormed recently? I would see if he is eating, and look at his poop, and report back.

By observing our other chickens, I dont think he is puffing up. Isnt that when they are scared or defending themselves? We have not moved. The only new chicken was born Nov.10th. She is a banny and her mother was too. But they were not in the same coop. Her mother disappeared a few weeks ago. The new one"Skittlz" has been out with all of our other chickens. We do not leave them unattended now, not even five minutes. We havent dusted or sprayed any of them for mites this year. And we had no idea that chickens needed to be wormed. can you explain what we need? We are new at this chicken life. It is challenging at times. What is coccidiosis?

Look at their skin especially around the vent by parting the feathers to check for lice/mites. Treat with 5% Sevin dust for those if you spot any. Worming with fenbendazole (SafeGuard), Valbazen, or whatever wormer that is commonly used in your area that will get more than round worm twice a year is good. Puffing up is huddling or scrunching up with the head drawn in. Here is a good link about coccidiosis: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/12/coccidiosis-what-backyard-chicken.html
