I have ten breeds of hens. One or two are laying jumbo size eggs which are light brown and speckled. The shell is very fragile and the yolk is small. Does anyway know what breed lays eggs like this?

I have 36 hens and all the eggs I collect are beautiful. Each coop has oyster shell and none of my hens are ill.

Thank you for your reply but if you "doubt" whether any breed lays eggs like this, perhaps you should wait till you know information rather than "doubt." This is not helpful.

I guess I am defensive but I take good care of my hens. This egg is a good egg. It is coming out of a chicken that lays this kind of egg. I would like to know if anyone knows of a breed that may lay this kind of egg.

Figlover: I think that some hens just lay eggs that are not as nice as others. I have 3 EE. One of them lays a torpedo shaped egg with a very rough surface. The other 2 lay a beautiful egg, both in shape and surface texture. They have all received the same care. No one is implying that your hens are not properly cared for. Some hens just don't absorb all of the nutrients available to them, perhaps have a bit of a glitch in the reproductive system. In a commercial poultry farm, with all of the hens being of the same breed, some eggs will be culled due to imperfection of form. I just keep the torpedo eggs for my own consumption. (sometimes they are truly ugly!!!)

Figlover: I have two Barred Rock girls who sometimes lay light brown eggs with darker brown speckles on them, if that is what you mean by speckles. Recently I got a couple of eggs that had little hard deposits on the outside of them. Found out that they are calcium deposits, where someone got a little too much calcium. Probably overindulging on oyster shell! Nothing to worry about there, unless it continues. Haven't seen one like that in the past few days.
