I aquired a couple of NN hens a coup weeks back and thought to myself Hmm how would they taste.I got my answer when my breeder had a hen break a leg and she couldn't cull her herself. Nice tasting bird. I want to try to breed my own.
Question would a NN/RIR make a decently sized meat bird at around 20 or so weeks? I have a RIR red roo that is more than happy to service his ladies no matter if they are interesting to look at. Would a pure NN make a better meat bird at around the same age? Should I get a NN roo? The RIR is a gentle breeder and good flock master and I can not really afford to have another roo and do not want to cull him out. List of breeds I have are.
Naked neck
RIR
Cukoo Maran
EE's
White Cornish
Cochin cross
Mutt breed with some other LF in it.
Would any or all of these be a good decent growing cross to add to my NN meat birds?

I raised these one year. I like the flavor but at 16 weeks they only dressed out at 3 lbs. And I raised all cockerls. I loved to look at them as they were all different colors.

I would raise these again possibly for our own use but never for sales again.

And the first batch was from S & G Poultry and the other was from Cackle if I recall. Cackle is cheaper by far. Also, with the heat and shipping the cost from S & G could be quite expensive as their location is not a good spot for shipping birds. I cancelled one shipment one year because the USPS was going to charge more to ship than what the birds were in price.
