Neck Injury

Posted before but did not get any feedback....if someone with ANY experience on injured chicken neck can respond would be helpful. Our hen was dragged over her 10' fence and attacked by something unknown. We rescued her 1 week ago Monday. She is not really eating but drinking water. Not walking well and her neck appears to be crooked. Don't know if she is in pain. We keep her inside dog carrier and spoon feed her water and food. Change her wee-wee pads and take outside for physical therapy daily. We are not seeing improvement. Am I looking for the impossible? May need more time for healing? How do I know when that is it? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks! New chicken mom.

If after a week she is no better I would put her out of her misery.

I can't do it myself, so I hold them while my vet does a "cervical dislocation". Yes, he breaks their neck. I don't have the hand strength to do it.

I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. What on earth can get a chicken over a 10' fence? Time to reinforce and cover.

I'm facing a similar situation with a rooster whose beak was pretty much chewed off. I've spoon fed him for three days, and now I'm going to see what happens. If he can eat enough to keep himself going, that's great. If he can't eat, we'll probably put him down before he starves to death. Quality of life is the criteria here. If chickens can't do what they need to do to be chickens, it's more merciful to let them go and pat yourself on the back for doing what you could to help. Good luck.

Without knowing any info. of your other post we can't really help.

And to answer SallyF try a deep food dish so he can put his entire beak in it and get food, also make sure he gets grit because he might be unable to get it on his own.
