Hi everyone, new to the forum. Need some help interpreting a necropsy

Had a hen die today, this is the 3rd we've lost in a few months, so I finally decided to open this one up and take a look. The first died similarly to this one- got sick, lethargic, stopped eating, and died in a day or so. Year old wilkie, rarely laid eggs. The second one looked a bit sick, then had a prolapsed vent and passed shortly after we attempted to re-insert the vent after cleaning it up. This third one lost use of her legs, and couldnt move around. She pretty much stopped eating unless enticed, but seemed otherwise alert and healthy. She was just over 1.5 years old, and a very small hen - we were told shes a Mille Fleur when we got her.

Would really like to hear everyone's opinion...I'm chalking this one up to internal laying. What I saw that was concerning -

1. The ovary seemed to lack a liner, there were just small pinhead size "cysts" everywhere where the ovary should be (pictured).

2. Found what appears to be a leather-ish egg casing (pictured below with the gizzard) inside her abdomen cavity, this was loose and sitting tucked in with her other organs. I'm guessing this was the cause of her death. She never laid, but one egg in her life. She had dropped a "lash egg" once before as well, and I know it was her because it happened in front of us while she was on roost.

3. Deposits or growths throughout - are those just fat deposits? The yellow pebble looking pieces. Those are as-is, I hadnt touched them.

4. The swollen, black ....intestine? Does not look normal to me.

Thank you for posting your necropsy pictures, and sorry for your loss. I had a hen recently with a small solid white hard mass, just floating loose in the abdomen. Oddly, I also found a large lash egg. There was a small black section of intestines, and I could not find the oviduct. I assumed it was oviduct cancer. I think the circled cysts are likely cancer. I wonder if your lame hen died of Mareks disease. A necropsy by a state vet with testing would be the only way to know for sure. Mareks can cause tumors. Here is a picture of cystadenocarcinoma (cancer) of the ovary:

Im a waterfowl hunter, so the necropsy was fairly easy.

I would agree that it was likely cancer, after seeing the pictures you shared. Figure 6 looks exactly like the circled cysts, and were located where the ovary should be; I couldnt locate a egg duct that led to the vent either.

I also questioned Mareks, but she didnt have cloudy eyes or the other signs of it, other than she lost use of her legs and her one foot basically curled up. Guessing the cysts possibly started pushing on nerves and shut her legs down, she could still move/kick them but couldnt stand or use them.

The odd thing is that we switched to a mash feed, and the first two hens passed away. We thought it was possibly from the food, but dismissed it. Well a month or so now, we fed that mash again and this hen got sick a few days later. Possibly a strange coincidence, but I dont know. Weve stopped feeding that mash for good now.

Thanks for sharing the pictures! Doesnt seem like much I could do to keep her from passing.

Thank you for sharing!

You mentioned you hadn't touch them.

Did you end up touching them?
I am curious as to if they were hard rock like or rubber like.
