I had two broody hens, one Finished her hatch (Two eggs, one chick developed) 3-4 days ago. She is a good mama to her chick. The other broody mama is sitting on three duck eggs that started pipping last night. She is not as good of a mama as the first hen. She leaves her clutch more often than the other and isn't nearly as protective of them. She's been off of her hatching eggs for about 15 min and it's a tad chilly right now. Would it be possible to place these eggs under my first broody hen who has the newly hatched chick? Thoughts? The purpose for doing so would be because I think the first hen will protect them from the flock better, after they are introduced. She is still sitting in her empty nest and calling her new chick to sit with her. She and her baby are separated, in an enclosure of their own, inside the coop.
