A few weeks ago I asked for advice on injured pullet. This is the sweetest disposition of all the chickens, but she is lowest in pecking order. I got all these at the same time, they were hatched within a couple days of each other, they've always been together since. But they've all picked on little miss injured. I got her accepted back into the flock when she got well, then she started laying her first eggs in the nesting boxes. There was no problem at first. 2 other hens had started laying about a week before miss injured. She laid for 4 days, then no more eggs from her. These chickens get to free range in a pretty large area days if someone is home to watch out for them. When they would not get to leave the secured pen miss injured would pace back and forth and just fuss fuss fuss. Today I decided to keep all penned because I wanted to know where the extra eggs were going, if miss injured and another pullet were laying away from the nests. Sure enough she tried to get into the nesting boxes inside the coop and Miss Drama Queen top hen ran her out, even though Drama Queen had already done her laying job and was running around eating. So miss injured waited a little while and tried to go back to the nesting boxes and Mr. Domino Roo would not let her get near the nesting boxes. She laid her egg on the ground right in front of the gate. Poor baby.
Why are they doing this to her? They don't try to kill her anymore, but still pick on her.
How can I make them let her use those nesting boxes?
Poor baby has to lay, and she wants to in the boxes, but has no choice.
