I'm new to this site and very new to raising chickens. I'm actually a kinder teacher in Redlands. We want to hatch eggs at school (I've already got homes for the chicks) but don't know where to get the eggs. Anyone close to us that can point me in the right direction? Any advice and suggestions are welcome.

Check your paper, local craigslist, farm store, etc for eggs---better than getting them shipped in---usually a better hatch. I wish I knew how to help all these schools that want to hatch chicks----I see some night mares. A few days ago someone got the stuff for brooders for some class rooms----a 18 gallon tote and a 250 watt heat lamp----was frying the chicks---I posted some info and they got some smaller bulbs. You do not know----guess you do not know but with the internet and good sites like this one----you can find out quick if you will ask the right ones.

I called a local feed store and they suggested Craigslist. Scored! Picking up my eggs on Saturday. Now I've got to get my incubator all prepped and make sure it is right temperature.
I hate to say I made a few mistakes last year too. This year doing lots of research so I don't make the same mistake. The chicks that survived are really thriving with the families that adopted them. They all report that they are super social and loved being handled, even as adults.
So glad I found this site to help me along the way. The lessons the kids learn from the experience are so much better than reading it in a book or listening to their teacher. Can't wait for my eggs and the adventure to begin.
