Hi Everyone,
I think I've got a real problem with one of my girls. Yolko Ono (affectionately known as Yolkie) is seven years old and up to this point, has been extremely healthy. For the last two days, when I have gone out in the morning to spot clean the coop, I have found a mass of bright red gelatinous material with some dark spots. She is listless, very quiet, has next to no appetite and her comb has paled out. It's obvious she is bleeding internally. I've been doing some research and it sounds like she may have picked up Coccidiosis from wild birds. Do you think that's a possibility? From what I've read, it sounds like she requires some serious veterinary care or it will take her.

Do you think I am in the ballpark? This is so hard. I only have three girls right now and they have been with me a long time-one nearly 11 years. I hate the thought of losing her but I also don't want her to experience any unnecessary suffering.

Words of wisdom? Thanks so much.

Do you have a vet nearby that will do fecal float test for you. A lot of vets, even if they do not see chickens, will do a fecal float and let you know if she has internal parasites.

From what I understand, Coccidiosis is more of a young bird issue b/c older birds build up tolerance to the pests who live in the soil. But, she could have other (even coccidiosis) internal parasites. The fecal float is usually a quick and inexpensive test and it will give you an idea of what you are dealing with.

Pictures of the droppings and your girl would help those on this forum who are very experienced give advice.

It is doubtful that she has coccidiosis at 7 years, since most birds build up tolerance to the organisms in their environment. It does no harm to treat her with Corid however, or have your vet run a fecal float on some fresh droppings. Corid dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 5-7 days. Worms or reproductive problems could also cause blood in droppings. Can you post a picture of the bloody dropping?

I will post a picture. Naturally I didn't have my phone with me. What is Corid and where do I get it? Thank you so much for responding.

Thank you for responding. I will see if our vet will do a fecal float. They don't see chickens but maybe they will do me a favor. I will definitely post a picture. It's mostly the bloody gelatinous stuff. It was shocking to see.

If they will do it for you, you will be able to rule out/in certain things.

It also comes in powder. I find the liquid is easier to deal with. Tractor Supply or any farm/ranch store will have it.
