I am wanting to get a rooster in a couple of months, but I'm not sure which breed I should get. I have 2 silver laced wyandottes, 1 gold laced Wyandotte, 2 black australorps, and 1 buff orpington. I am wanting to raise chicks from my flock so going with a silver laced Wyandotte seems like it makes the most sense, but I really love the personality of my orpington. The wyandottes are very calm, but they don't really like to be touched/held. The orpington jumps on my back and is the first one to walk up to us. I have only had them for 4 days though; do you think I can make the Wyandottes more friendly by handling them each day? Do you think it's their breed or just their personalities?
I also like the idea of selling chicks.. Is there a market for orpington/Wyandotte crosses though? And what would a SLW and GLW cross look like? It seems like they would be pretty, but I'm not sure they would be as popular as the recognized breed colors are. I also thought about getting a lavender orpington to breed to my buff and then breeding the chicks back to the rooster to get lavenders to keep. Ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance!
