Hi All,

My wife and I are new to raising chickens and aren't having great luck at this point. :(

First, we were sold two turkeys. Thankfully we already have a loving home for them.

Second, we learned one of our lovely chickens is a rooster. We have had him since birth and he is now a month old. Unfortunately, we have to send him to a new home. Any help or suggestion on where to send him would be very nice. We live in Pinellas county and would like him to go somewhere close. Thanks for any help you might have.

Is the comb on the "pullet" as red as it looks in the picture?

They are both cockerels then.

Maybe it's time to get some started pullets, or place a small order through a hatchery for sexed females. It seems the sellers in your area aren't very trustworthy.

Howdy hydraspo and Welcome to BYC

Living in Aus, I am unfortunately unable to help with the best method for finding a good home for your rooster but I do wish you luck.

With regards identification of the chick on the left, I am swaying towards a Langshan. The feathered outer toe is a Langshan trait but I could be wrong.

Sadly I also agree with keesmom, that little one looks likes a rooster to me also. If you can though, I would be hanging onto it until you know for sure.

Keesmom, thank you. Unfortunately these were delivered as eggs as they were part of the life cycle project at a school I work with. I will be looking into some reputable dealers soon. Any suggestions on those would be great too.

Telia, thank you for your help as well. As far as a Langshan goes, are they something special? I don't want to deal with crowing and potentially upset neighbors.

Hey there hydraspo

I have a bantam Langshan and I think she is pretty special

It was more of a waver to not make any judgement calls on gender until you know for sure.

I am in the same position as you and prefer to not upset the neighbours with crowing and have made a judgement call on possible roosters and I have been wrong. I rehomed four that I was positive were roosters due to comb and wattle colour and size in comparison to the obvious pullets and even with the large red comb, one was a pullet.

While sailing down the river Denial, I kept one youngster until he started crowing and confirmed by fears. With his crowing though, it wasn’t full on in the beginning and I was able to find him a home within 4 days. When I mentioned him to the neighbours, after he had moved on, they had not even heard him.
