Not yet an emergency:

This morning I noticed one of my CM pullets trying to lay. Hatched 9/22/09. I must of spooked her because when I checked later- no egg.

Before dinner I went to clean out all the waterers, picked up two blue eggs, and on the way back to the house almost stepped on a dark brown speckled egg. I was all eggcited, and went to check the new layer. She and her 3 sisters usually nap on the patio chair by the back door, and sure enough, they were all dog piled asleep. When I walked up, the 3 bailed, and the new layer TRIED to run away.

She was limping really hard, almost unable to put weight on one foot. While I watched, she laid a gynourmous poo (no blood) but the process was reminicent of when the trail horse in front of you is gassy.

Her whoowhoodilly seemed a little red and poofy---but nothing awful like the pics you see of a prolapsed vent. Let's be honest, that part of chicken is never pretty, but it seemed a little bigger and irritated. I caught her & checked her foot & leg. No visiable injury or swelling, she was walking fine an hour earlier. Her vent also didn't look terrible. Not picture worthy. She's crated with water & food. I'll check her again when the sun goes down.

My question: has anyone ever had something like this happen? Can a pullet sprain an ankle trying to run away from the business happening back there? I can sympathize: I remember having that same reaction with my 2nd son----but does anyone have any ideas?

Thats what I am thinking...but ugh, what an awful day for her.

When Lucy the rescue chicken was alive, she had an awful time with eggs. For inflamed vent I used Preparation H, helped a lot. But she did eventually prolasp a month later, used same treatment and pushing things back in. Few months later she apparently had a heart attack (what I figured) when she was 6 months (very heavy) with me, plus the 45 days old she was when I found her on the road after she fell off the slaughter truck. That might help.
