Need help with bedding materials?

I've been reading that hay/straw is bad for chickens and can cause respritory problems. Is this true? And if it is, what bedding should I use?

I use shavings for chicks and hay or straw for my older birds - have not had problems.

I use wood chips in the run...wood shavings in the coop and hay in the nesting boxes. They seems to be happy with all my choices. I am going to try sand in the coop once we put a vinyl floor down. Sand in the coop gets great reviews.

I use hay and straw, also dry leaves, etc. My parents used hay and straw. My grandparents used hay and straw. My great grandparents used hay and straw. None of them ever reported respiratory issues with their chickens due to the use of these kinds of bedding materials.
