I have had my faverolle girls seperated since i got them last fall. since then i have exposed them to two faverolle roos. but they are still not fertile. i have put squiggy in with the girls for a day or two with no luck. then i put my newest roo, which is about six to eight months, in with the girls, no luck. then i put both roos in with the girls, thinking a little competition, might get the job done... but still nothing.
any suggestions???? just wanted to mention, squiggy has fathered several in the past... and the younger one is always mounting, when free ranging....

Is it possible that the roos were stressed by being put in with the girls if it is an enclosure that they are not familiar with? A couple of days does not seem like an awful long time for a chicken to become used to new surroundings.

Have you seen the roos covering the hens (and are the hens accepting it calmly or are they trying to wiggle away?)? If not, and if you've spent a fair amount of time watching, it may be lack of Doing the Deed and social issues involved. If you are seeing the roos on the hens, though, is it possible that they could use their butt fluff clipped back a bit? That seems to be the only way I can get fertile eggs out of my sussexes, and in fact they are getting a Personal Region Haircut this afternoon b/c I want to set some eggs in several weeks.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

My roo has been in with my gals since August, but he still isn't quite as ... um, amorous as we'd like.

Friend suggesting lacing their water with chardonnay ... but it just makes him sleepy

Seriously,
I would probably give them another week or so to get accustomed to one another. Can you get eggs from the hens he's mounting? Trap nesting, monitoring?
