I'm new to trying to hatch my own eggs. I talked to a man from a poultry 4H group in our area he told me I could put the chicken and duck eggs in the incubator together. I didn't think it sounded like a good idea cause they don't hatch at the same time but since he said we could my son insisted. I joined BYC a few weeks ago been reading a lot and see that I was right and I shouldn't have. What can I do when it is time for the chicken eggs to go on lock down but the duck eggs still need turned. My aunt has an incubator too. Would my best bet be to hope hers is empty and move some? if so do I move the chicken eggs for lock down or the duck eggs? Plus I have read that I should let the call duck eggs cool down for a few mins. a day is that true with all eggs or just call ducks.

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

I have no experience with ducks so I can't help you there. I would see if you can borrow your aunts incubator and move your chicken eggs to the new bator for lockdown. Anyone else have any ideas?

If you can get the other bator that would be ideal. I'd get it up and running around day 16 so it will be stabalized by lockdown and then just move the chicken eggs in there to hatch. A lot of people do that with staggerd hatches so I think you'll be fine.

ETA: I think the way to do it in the future would be to start the duck eggs a week before you put the chicken eggs in, you still might have to split the difference on the humidity needs and hope for the best, but at least they'd all be hatching at the same time.
