One of our peahens is acting weird. She keeps opening her mouth/jaws widely. I caught her and looked into her mouth and nothing foreign is in there. I tried to get her to drink water and all she did was just look at me and let the water run out of her mouth. She had energy but i haven't seen her eat or drink. She is in with two other hens and a Peacock. Their share the large space with several cochin bantys, ducks, geese and chickens. Anyone have any ideas?

could she be trying to lay an egg? Could it be stuck?

No. She was walking around the yard but with her wings down like she was unhappy. I read another post where a peahen was having issues and they thought that she might be calcium deficient since the peafowl's eggs are huge and take a lot of calcium out of them. I think we will doctor her with calcium.

She's opening her jaw like her jaws are stuck. When she opens her jaws, she tilts her head backwatds. I picked her up and held her jaws so that i could look down her throat to rule out a stuck seed or something.

The girls are laying eggs now even though they are only a year old. Our male is young too... He is only 2 years old and while he has started flirting, i haven't seen him breed yet.

I'm thinking that this heat we've been having isn't helping her either, ESPECIALLY if she's low in calcium.

I'm pretty new to this but my hens do that sometimes too and it seems to be just because they are too hot, they pant and yawn almost, as well as hold their wings away from their bodies to stay as cool as possible. Could this maybe be it? I can only sort of imagine what she might look like when shes doing it so I'm not 100% sure but it sounds a lot like what my girls do. Good luck

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer! It's just that the other two peahens are not doing this and they have to be just as hot as this girl. So I'm not sure. I'm thinking she might be calcium deficient as she is laying eggs. That's the only logical explanation that i can make heads or tails over.

Again, Thanks!
