I have a home built coop and 5 Polish Crested hens who are a year old and lay lots of smallish white eggs! Need ideas for deep bedding and what it looks like. I use lots of wood shavings which keeps the eggs clean but wondered what else I could use? Pros and Cons of different bedding? Thanks!

Welcome to BYC. In my pigeon lofts I used ground corncob bedding with great success. The problem is that much of this product is very dusty. Finding 'clean' product was difficult, and it was expensive.

Hi and welcome! Inside the house I'll use pine shavings or flakes. Sometimes I'll sprinkle in some sweet pdz ( google it). My neighbor uses the pelletized pine bedding. It seems to work for her.
And the outside run I'll use grass clippings, oak leaves, with wood chips- the heavy chunky kind from tree trimmers who happily dump it for free here
FYI in the summer I stop deep litter method inside and will clean up my house much more often than the winter. Too many insects.

Hi there. I use large pine shavings in my coops and brooder. But only the deep litter method in the winter for warmth. I cant even imagine the smell after a full summer of deep litter and the bug would be even worse. Works great to keep everyone a little extra warm in the winter but as soon as spring hits I clean it out.
