First things first, do not be afraid to tell me your option good or bad I can take it all. I love chickens, finding an egg in my coop every day the colors of the roosters and hens, the egg colors and watching baby chicks grow and feather out. I've always wanted to sell chickens "start a business" make a little extra on the side from my normal job. Getting started is a little slow deciding what chicks I want to sell and for how much, well I finally took the jump. I made my own incubators, 2 that work perfectly. Hatched 4 batches 80% hatch rate, but I only have 4 hens laying right now so I'm not hatching hundreds at a time.
So I started looking at hatcheries and found one close to me about 8 hrs away, Ideal Hatchery, I live in Texas so I decided to look at their site. I got an email one day stay they were having a sale on overstock chicks $1 a chick standard straight run and straight run bantams, so I jumped on that sell and bought 25 of each. I was able to sell almost all the standard chicks, where I live not many people wanted bantams I don't think they know how beautiful they can be, their lost...for now. So now I have 20 something bantams I plan in raising to see what breeds I have and sell later (hopefully). But I did notice everyone wants pullets, of course they wants eggs and that's all
. The hatchery had anther sell on heavy breed pullets brown egg layers so I bought 25, they will also have a sale on pullets again surprise mix (white, brown, blue/green) and on amerucanas pullets as well I plan on getting 25 of each again. I sell my straight runs for $3 a chick and pullets for $4 I am going to try to sell the Amerucanas for $5 everyone seems to want the blue/greens eggs (probable think they are better for you go fig)
But what I want to know is, is this a good way to start making money from a hobby maybe start a business or just to see where it goes, I really want to sell pure rare breeds standards and bantams, I want to sell the beauty of these chickens not just pullets for eggs and roosters for meat. I do have a few rare breeds now 1 lavender orpington and 5 jubilee orpington since hatched from eggs I picked up kinda of a bad hatch since I had 12 lavender and 18 jubilee, fertility wasn't very good so I'll have to get eggs mail from anther seller and try that out. I also set aside a few standard breeds the I ordered that have feathered legs and silver feathers right (blue) and a few bantams that look like black tail Japanese and a really blue feathered leg bantam I can't wait to see what it is. I will breed them to keep them pure and sell the babies. I do plan on making black sex links since it will be easier to tell males and females apart, vent sexing is not my forte. But again I want to sell beauty and awe something that catches peoples eyes as they drive by, that make people ask what breed is that chicken I've never seen it before. So I'm really asking am I starting on the right foot buy from a hatchery and reselling when I get them building my stock from them until I get the breeds I want to sell, any thoughts and advice would be really appreciated and again don't be afraid to tell me I'm being stupid or I shouldn't be doing it this way . Thanks for reading
