Need to introduce a new hen or 2.

Hi Everyone,

We've had 2 hens (buff orp. & wellsummer) since last fall. We had our Welsummer die yesterday, they are/were about two years old. I've read a few different ways to introduce new chickens, but I'm wondering about what age.

Should we look for one or two about the same age, younger, or older?

I'm not sure if age matters, but you should probably introduce 2 instead of 1.

I think you would be ok with one more, and a bird that is close to the same size would be best. Separate them with a cage or fencing for the first few days to let them become accustomed to each other.

Thanks for the replies. So size is more important then age. Has anyone had any luck with hens from the Humane Society?
