Need to isolate a hen - best bedding for isolation crate?

It looks like I am going to have to isolate a hen to treat her foot injury.
My DH has agreed to let me use the puppy's smaller training crate as an isolation cage.
What should I use as bedding? I'm out of pine shavings right now and it'll be Tuesday before I can get to town.
How 'bout newspaper covered by hay? I have a couple bales of hay I use for their nestboxes. Would that work?

Just "dust it out" before putting it in, and keep a close eye on it, it is not as absorbent as the shavings and can sour a lot faster.
