Need to resolve the mystery of the hen not laying... she's only 14 months young!

Yes, sometimes it is better to cull and get to the bottom of the issue than trying to treat what is not treatable and having the bird suffering through our well meant intentions.

Did you take any pictures during your home necropsy for us to help identify what the root cause might have been?

Unfortunately, I didn't manage to photograph her. It was almost a prolapse, the cloaca was protruding and the oviduct was the area filled with albumen and about three full size yolks, and a few smaller ones floating in there.

Next time, I'll bear in mind to take and share the necropsy images.

I'm sorry you had to cull her i bet it was hard. But we know it was for the better.

It is always hard to slaughter/cull the birds, especially since they are hand-reared individuals and have names.

I know it can be rather stressful having to cull and taking pictures will probably the last thing on one's mind while doing it, though it can be quite educational and help to find closure and peace of mind.

Indeed it would be very educational to take the photos, but the combination of stress and sorrow was bit much.

Its like that with many animals. Even the kids hamsters and other small pets where hard to put down.
