Hi, this is my first time posting on this site. I've been reading some of the threads on this site trying to get information hatching ducklings and chickens. I could use some assistance in figuring out my situation. I have one Pekin duck egg left incubating out of 28. Although about 85% weren't fertile, I had a few that began embryos. Unfortunately I lost all but one early on in development. The one I have left is on day 25 of incubation but the problem is the air sac. It has developed vertically down the length of the egg instead of horizontally across the top. I'm not sure exactly how this happened, all the other eggs were fine. I'm concerned that the duckling won't be formed correctly but also that it will have a difficult time hatching. I'm hoping someone on this site will have some insight and suggestions as to what I can do to hopefully ensure my ducklings hatch and survival. I greatly appreciate anyone's assistance.

Hi and welcome to BYC! I don't have any hatching or incubating experience, but lots of others do. @Lacrystol , do you have any advice?

Ok so update on my duck egg, I candled it around noon and discovered that it has pipped through the air sac, but the duckling itself is upside down in the egg. Its head is at the small end. The duckling also cannot turn properly to zip the outside shell due to the air sac taking up almost half of the shell lengthwise. Also because it cannot turn properly the duckling cannot peck at the outter shell. I'm wondering if I should create a pip hole just above where its bill is to see if that would help it out at all? Any suggestions or words of advise would be awesome. Thanks

Perkins take 28 days and your on day 25. Guess what? HES RIGHT ON SCHEDULE!! What you are seeing is the air cell dipping. Three days before hatching the air cell falls to one side. This is all totally normall get ready he's coming.

No leave him it's to early yet give him his due date

youll be amazed that at the last minute they turn around and get to the air cell and start cracking out. I'm curious though if you have him on a turner? If so lay him down ducks have a really hard time hatching while on the turner

Thank you for all of your help and advice. I was just concerned because of the air sac but was unaware that they drop to one side before hatch. I do have it on its side not on a turner so at least I'm doing something right. I'm really hoping that it survives. Thank you again for answering my questions, I feel a lot more at ease now.

In the next 48 hours or so you should see some progress either him making noise inside or the egg will shake a lot then go still then shake then still . All normal. Ducks take longer to hatch versus a chicken so you have to just sit and wait, lots of patiences.
