I have a small flock & so does my neighbor. He has wayyyyy more birds than I do. They have approx 10 large birds in a coop, and approx 20 bantams in a chain link dog run with only a small shade structure. Last week, they went on vacation and asked my teenage son to feed & water for them while they were away, one of their waterers shattered, so we got them a plastic tub from our garage for water and set it in the shade for them. The neighbors came back on Friday & removed the tub, replaced it with a small waterer that is clearly super dirty & in the sun.
Now it's Sunday & it's near empty, in full sun and their birds haven't been let out since. It doesn't look like they are home this weekend. My question is, should I send my son over there to clean the waterer and place it in the shade, & make sure they have food , or let it be? I don't want to overstep my boundaries but it seems the birds are neglected.

You could send him over to tend things and say if questioned " Oh that was just last week? I thought it was this weekend too."
Or you could call animal control and have them look into it.
Personally if you get along with this neighbor and it sounds like you do since he asked you to tend them before, I would have the son tend them or better yet you should be the one. That way no one can come down on the kid.

Just curious... When they removed the tub did they happen to come by and say anything?

No, they actually never came by to say they were home, or pay my son as promised either. Additionally, while they were gone, one of their sprinkler pipes burst and I had to go over and turn off their water so the yard/house didn't flood. I texted them to let them know, so it wouldn't be a surprise to come home to a house with no water, and all they said was thanks in response.
I don't know. It's weird.

Yes, I'm sure they have been home. Their water is back on & their gate has been unchained & opened... Cars moved.
