I have a 3 year old silkie, and she has not been herself for months. Vet sent a poop sample to state lab and they found whip worms. I dewormed with safegaurd for 5 days, and after the last treatment her poops turned neon yellow. This is NOT cecal poop, I'm used to seeing those in the flock. She is still very lethargic, tail down, not eating much and sleeping often. I can't figure out what is going on but this sure seems like more than just a worm load. Here is her background, to help try and troubleshoot:
I rescued her from a zoo and because she couldn't figure out the coop ramp we called her "DoDo bird". Taking in various rescues also caused me to unknowingly bring in Mareks disease which I lost half my flock to 2 years ago. DoDo was vaccinated and never showed symptoms. Occasionally I have battled respiratory issues here, and have seen lice once but she never caught anything. We always thought she was really tough. Last winter while she was broody her two silkie friends died of pneumonia. I tried many times to break the broodiness with no luck, so I started just putting food in the box with her. When she snapped out of her broodiness she never got back to normal, and she had a really bad molt. A respiratory issue came back and half my flock was sick but again not her. After a few weeks I took the fecal sample in where they discovered the parasites. She did have one day when she was
Raspy, but it went away. The whole flock was on tetracycline for 1Week about 2 weeks ago to try and clear up the respiratory stuff. The dark yellow poop just started a few days ago after the last dose of safegaurd I gave her.
She is very underweight from all of this, but such a tough girl. Worse case senario would be that she has developed Mareks tumors since her system was compromised by the worm load, but all my chickens that died of Mareks had greenish poop as their organs began to not work anymore. I have never seen this neon yellow poop before. Should I try an antibiotic again? I did read that heavy worm loads can cause infections. Maybe she's anemic from the weight loss? Can anyone suggest what I should try next?
I'm doing probiotics, Rooster booster vitamins, and ACV every other day.
