I am working on building a coop for my phoenix chickens. I will be allowing my hens to hatch their own eggs in the coop. I was wondering though because I will be using a broody hen to hatch eggs how high off the ground should her nest box be if she is a phoenix or a Sumatra hen?

It makes sense to keep the nest fairly low so the chicks can get out without too far a drop. These breeds are sometimes called "pheasant like", but even pheasants nest on the ground.

I have had free ranging hens build nests so far up in the hay that the chicks have a 7 ft drop to the ground, and all the chicks survived that fall, so it doesn't have to be on the ground.
