Nest box impact absorber ?

We shingled the nest box lid, that thing is very heavy. My son was checking for eggs, his fiftieth time today and dropped the lid on his finger and somehow ripped a chunk of meat off. Any ideas for some sort of slow close impact absorption method?

Hardware store. Ask them for a soft close safety latch/slow close hinge for a trunk/chest/toy box.
