The nest box leaks when it rains. I thought putting the roof overhanging it would take care of that but it didn't. Any ideas how to seal that crack and still be able to open the box?

I would put some kind of flashing on the crack where the hinges are and then caulk the heck out of where it attaches to the wall so that no water could get behind it. Or run the flashing all the way up to underneath the roofline.

And then maybe put shingles on the lid, diverting water away and down. I can't really see if there is a slope to the lid, but if not, I would seriously consider redesigning the box construction so that water flows down and can't backup into the coop.

We cut a wide strip of pond liner found at our local garden store and adhered it over the crack using that tar roofing patch stuff we had on hand. Works perfectly!

Funny you should mention the inner tube! We actually tried that first from a motorcycle tire but ran into problems due to the curve. If you had a big enough tube to work with that gave you a flat piece it should work fine.

Oh, I didn't think of the curve. Hmm, thanks for mentioning that. I still haven't decided what to do about that..

Do you know if the type of plastic of a pond liner is any different than sheet plastic or thick trash bags?
