I am situating my nest boxes out side the coop just past the roosts with poop board. I have a 4" lip on the nest box to keep eggs and nest materials in. Right now, the boxes have a 12" to 15" inch width at the opening (the 12' inch boxes get to to 15" inside), but because of the poop board, the height at the opening is only 10 inches (the height also gets bigger inside). Is that big enough for RI reds? Should I reduce my box lip by an inch or so and increase the height of the opening?

I found some old nestboxes that I put in my coop, but for my orpingtons the opening was too short, very funny watching them try to smash into the boxes, but I raised the top a little so they have about 10 inches and they are fine now.
