Nest Box

I have 6 Red Stars, how big of a hole does a nest box have to have? I was thinking about using a cat litter box that has a top on it but not sure if the entrance is big enough. It measures about 71/2 x 71/2 I'm not sure if they will go through something that small, the inside is plenty big.

I used this for measurments... 12"x12"x12" for the box it self and a 9" wide and 6" tall opening.

All of my nestboxes are covered kitty litter boxes. I bought the biggest one I could find, but I don't know the exact measurements right now. My girls love them.
ETA: I have LF brahma hens and they are really big girls.
