Hi there we are still building our coop and hubby wanted me to ask if the nest box area has to be dark? He is thinking of having more windows in the back part of the coop for more ventilation and light but it would be right across from where the nest boxes are? Any thoughts? TY

Mine are next to a window and across from another window but not directly in front of it. I don't think it's any problem, they feel safe and secure just being enclosed in the nest box.

You always can install privacy curtains.

Yes. I just cut strips into the burlap sack. There are 3 nestboxes covered. Initially I pulled the curtain to the side, so that it didn't completely conceal the first box. They used it most at first but now it could be any one of the 3.

Take a look at my BYC page. You can see the nest boxes through the full glass door or either of the two windows. LOL...guess what I'm saying is that there's a LOT of light in my coop and I've never had issues with my girls laying anywhere but in their nest boxes. Of course NOW, with summer coming on, I've added curtains to my door/upper windows to block the heat/light a bit.

ETA: Mine sit in the nest box and watch what the others are doing through the windows...lol.

I love your coop...I like how you incorporated the "look" to blend in with the existing buildings. WOW! Lots of run space. Lucky girls!! How big did you make your boxes? I have large breed birds so I want to give mine plenty of room but not overdo it. Also, did you put any backing board behind the plastic sheeting? Now that you've had it up a while was it worth the cost? Thanks!
