"Nest pads" or straw or excelsior in nest boxes?

They would also help deter bugs and I find them cooler for the hens. I live in TX and straw or other gets pretty warm and stuffy in the boxes. They are suppose to help keep hens from laying in there too long, so Im hoping they will deter any potential broody's.
