Tom wasn't in the pen. The hens were fighting. The more I think about it and remember the more certain I am. Could be one hen was older. My older hens even now bully the younger ones. Even when they were setting, one hen would get off the nest and the other one would move all the eggs under her. Then the other hen would get back on and try and nuzzel a few eggs back.
What works for one person may not always work for another and if I let two set on the same nest now, everthing might be fine.
